The Hanover Area YMCA recently purchased land to build a new, larger facility to replace its South Hanover location, according to a news release from the YMCA.

The building will be a 78,000 square foot multi-sport complex, the news release states, and will be located at the corner of Fairview Drive and Beck Mill Road. The complex will feature two indoor turf fields, a large gymnasium, three outdoor fields, a walking trail, state-of-the-art cardio center, child care facility, cycling center and more, according to the news release. It will accommodate indoor and outdoor athletic competitions, individualized sports instructions and more space for youth and adult sports programs.

Studies indicated the need for a much larger and diverse facility to replace the existing South Hanover YMCA location at 1013 Baltimore Street. A growth in population and housing on the south end of town and throughout the Hanover community encouraged the formation of the new building, the news release states.

A group of YMCA committee members campaigned to raise the necessary funds for the facility and have raised $5.5 million from the business community toward their goal of $6.3 million. Many contributions were from naming opportunities and donations.

“While we still need to raise $800,000, the ground-breaking ceremony is anticipated for spring of 2016. The construction of the facility will take approximately eight months to complete. Once completed, it will be a great addition to our North Hanover and Littlestown locations, as well as an incredible and unique asset to our community, generating economic growth and providing lots of new programming activities for the youth in the community.” said Liam Behrens, CEO of the Hanover Area YMCA, in the news release.
